Traumatic Injury and Fatality Risks in Solid Waste

Session Description: This presentation will describe the events associated with occupational traumatic injuries and fatalities for the solid waste industry based on data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. An emphasis will be placed on the differences in risks between collection and non-collection workers, such as transportation incidents, falls and being struck by mobile equipment. Recommended prevention strategies will also be illustrated using results of National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluations. Discussion questions from the audience are encouraged.
