Health and Safety at the Transfer Station: A Designer’s Perspective
Speaker: Doug Brinley, Principal Architect, KPG, Inc.- Seattle

Presentation Description:

Design for health and safety is one of the more important and impactful aspects of transfer station design. Conversely, safety design provisions in complete facilities are not always obvious to the casual observer, nor the experienced professional.

This presentation will present the four most effective design strategies to safeguard transfer station users and operators: 1) physical barriers and segregation of traffic; 2) clear communication; 3) line-of-sight design; and 4) design to mitigate slip and fall risks.

Specific examples with graphical images will be included on: a) site circulation designs; b) top-load chutes; c) tipping wall designs; d) fall protection measures; e) slip resistance measures and standards; and f) floor plan arrangements accommodating ‘line-of-sight’ designs.
