Session Description: After several years of funding for a robust PR and media campaign related to their curbside recycling program, Nashville faced budget cuts that required getting creative with funding education programs. Most municipalities across the country have faced reduced funding for waste reduction programs, but keeping citizens informed on recycling, composting, etc. is vital to maintaining and increasing participation.

This presentation will share some of the creative ideas Nashville found to fund its education programs, including:

1. Using free media, such as government access channels and video crews.
2. Grants from Keep America Beautiful and Tennessee Department of Transportation.
3. Contracts for recycling processor, waste disposal and waste collection and no-cost contracts with a small local recycler. These companies provide funding for recycling education programs.
4. Private partnerships with a major beverage manufacturer and outdoor advertising firm.
5. Changes to the City’s code, including waste hauler recycling requirements material bans, and fees for additional trash carts.
