SWANA's Applied Research Foundation has completed a study to determine the effectiveness of municipal solid waste landfills in controlling releases of heavy metals to the environment.
After an extensive review involving every recent, major study, Jeremy O'Brien, SWANA's Director of Applied Research, and the project's subscribers found that natural processes that occur within the landfill, such as precipitation and absorption, effectively inhibit heavy metals from dissolving into the leachate or exiting the landfill in the form of landfill gas.
The heavy metals report was compiled with help from the expertise of the late Dr. Fred Pohland of the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Pohland, who passed away in early January 2004, was one of the world's expert with respect to understanding the processes that occur within the landfill environment.
This report has been subjected to an outside peer review by an independent panel comprised of the leading academicians and researchers in this field:
Morton A. Barlaz, Ph.D., Professor and Associate Head, Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering, North Carolina State University
Debra R. Reinhart, Ph.D., Chair, Civil and Environmental Engineering Department and Professor and Associate Dean, College of Engineering and Computer Science, University of Central Florida
Timothy G. Townsend, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Department of Environmental Engineering Sciences, University of Florida.
The report was subsequently revised to respond to the questions and comments raised through the peer review process.
