With the majority of the municipal solid waste generated in North America disposed in landfills, the past several decades have seen concerted research efforts directed at addressing concerns over the long-term sustainability of sanitary landfilling practices. The “bioreactor” landfill concept, encompassing design and operational principles geared toward maximizing control over waste decomposition and its products, has developed into a set of promising technologies to address many of these concerns, but challenges remain. This month’s e-Sessions will assess the present state and future directions of bioreactor systems as a way of minimizing a landfill’s footprint and enhancing the sustainability of solid waste management in North America.
